Job seekers who are looking long-distance will tell you that the search is exponentially harder when youre not a local candidate.Many employers wont even bother to talk to nonlocal job applicants. That might seem unfair, but their reasons make sense from their perspective. First and foremost, if they have plenty of well-qualified local candidates, they dont have any particular need or incentive to take on the hassles of long-distance candidates. And there are hassles unlike local candidates, long-distance job seekers cant generally come in for an interview tomorrow, often expect travel expenses to be paid by the company, typically cant start as soon as local candidates can and sometimes require relocation assistance. Whats mora, long-distance candidates sometimes change their mind about moving at the end of the hiring process (or even after theyve already accepted the job) or worse, have trouble adjusting to the new area once on the job and leave to move back home just a few months into their employment.So its not surprising that many employers simply choose not to deal with long-distance candidates. But then where does that leave you, if youre trying to find a job somewhere else?Finding a job long-distance isnt impossible, but it will usually be harder. Here are five ways to improve your chances.1. Gird yourself for a longer search. Unless you have a strongly in-demand skill set, or youre very lucky, a long-distance search is going to take longer. Prepare yourself for that in advance, so that you dont become frustrated and demoralized.2. Explain yourself upfront. Offer some context in your cover letter to explain why youre seeking a job in this particular area, so that employers have some context for your application. For instance, you might explain that youre in the process of m oving to their area to join your partner, who took a job there, or that youre from the area and excited to move back where your family is. Offering some type of explanation will help employers see you less as a long-distance candidate and more as a candidate whos in the process of becoming local. Speaking of which3. The more that you can make your move sound like a done deal, the better. Employers are skittish about out-of-town candidates for all the reasons discussed above. So the more that you can make the move sound like something that is already in the works, the more you mitigate that disadvantage. Explaining that your move is already in process or specifying a date or time frame by which you hope to be living in the area can help in that regard.4. Put the new location on yourrsum. Many employers read rsums before they even look at cover letters, so take steps on your rsumto fight the out-of-town candidate stigma there too. For instance, you can put (relocating to California) d irectly below your address, or even use a local address if you have friends or family already living in the location youre targeting. (If you do the latter, though, be sure that youre prepared for the possibility that youll be called and asked to come in for an interview as soon as tomorrow.)5. Make it as easy as possible for the employer to interview and hire you. Since one reason employers are wary of dealing with out-of-town candidates is the hassle involved, do everything you can to minimize that hassle. That can mean covering your own travel expenses, paying higher prices for last-minute tuch tickets, forgoing relocation assistance and figuring out how you can start as soon as possible if youre offered the job.

They are simple and fun to create, but when done incorrectly, the video resume can squash any chance of getting that call back. The following are some common missteps that can will quickly get your viewer to click the stop button. Don’t send a video resume to someone who doesn’t want to see a video resume. Know your audience. There are certain fields and industries in which a video resume is relevant, and there are others in which a video resume makes little sense. A position that requires innovation, creativity or tech skills, would be perfect for a video resume. The higher up you are in your industry, the less likely a video resume is the way to go. That isn’t to say that video resumes aren’t seen as professional, but there is a time and place for such leaps outside of the box. Use common sense, and consideration for your audience when making the decision to submit a video resume. Don’t turn this into the “me” hour. Obviously your resume is all about you, but keep it relevant, short and don’t boast. The only information that should be included in a video resume is the same information that is presented in the black and white, paper version. Then what’s the point? The point is that you can get creative with it, you can use more tools, and you more efficiently display your attitude and personality. Plus, everyone loves video. Don’t get crazy. Just don’t go overboard. You have all of these tools to create an eye-catching resume, but that can quickly get out of hand. At the end of the day, recruiters still want to see a well-formatted and organized presentation of your professional experience. They are only looking for a few key things. These things should be presented in a clean, efficient format. If you spend hours on a motion graphic and the recruiter still doesn’t know what you do, that is a video resume fail. Don’t be a poser. It is always the point of every resume to highlight your positives, that’s a given, but the video resume should convey you as you really are. Unless you’re applying for the position of a used car salesman, don’t get flashy, loud and obnoxious just because you’re in front of a camera. And reversely, don’t pretend to be an ultra-professional, suit-and-tie kind of guy if that’s not who you are. The beauty of the video resume is that recruiters get a snap shot of your personality, and that’s a huge part of the hiring decision. Unless you want to wind up in a company culture where you don’t belong, be yourself. Don’t forget the basics. With all the flashy colors and transitions, don’t forget to get the meaty information in there. Again, everything that is found in the paper version of your resume should be included in the video. Recruiters don’t care that you can add music to a video; they need to know what you do, who you worked for, and how long you were there. Here are five millennial resume tips. 1. Create a value statement. While an objective statement has long been a part of resumes, it’s more important to show value when creating a resume. Spend time creating a value statement that not only showcases your skills and experience, but relates them to real-world business issues. Similar to a Summary of Qualifications, your value statement is a combination of your skills, experience, and personality traits that qualify you for a particular role: More than 5 years experience in training development and delivery, motivation and team building/leadership, general and technical project management, product marketing and management, negotiation, and mediation. 2. Lose the fluff. Employers are looking for candidates that will contribute to the organization in a specific manner. They are not focusing on skills or qualifications that are more universal. Who is best positioned to fill the demand for these green jobs?Our nations Veterans, says John Toth, Senior Director of Veterans Programs at Veterans Green Jobs. The non-profit organization is calling on all green employers to look at the many benefits that Veterans provide in helping fill green industry jobs. The organizations Veterans Green Force program matches Veterans military experience and career interests to the skills needed by green sector employers, linking them to training and educational programs and ultimately available green jobs. The program has already trained and placed hundreds of Veterans in outdoor conservation and home energy efficiency jobs. We spoke with Lieutenant Colonel (Retired, U.S. Army) John Tothfrom the Veterans Green Jobs Denver headquarters. MONSTER: How can Veterans Green Jobs help employers find the talent they need particularly growing companies that have larger hiring needs? TOTH: We go out and connect with Veterans, sit down with them one-on-one, learn their job skills and career goals, and then match them with employers.We want to build relationships with both the Veteran and the employers to meet both their needs MONSTER: What are some of the success stories youve facilitated in matching Veterans skills with the green job industry? TOTH: Dan Conerdis one of our success stories. He came to us two years ago and we recommended he look into the solar degree program at Red Rocks Community College.Recently, after earning his diploma, he returned to us and we were able to find him a job with one of our industry partners Namaste Solar. MONSTER: What are some of the new job opportunities youre seeing for hiring Veteransin green technology jobs? TOTH: There really are multiple opportunities out there, depending on your skill set and you career goals.When people think of green industry, they think in terms of solar and wind power.The reality is that there are many different avenues Veterans can pursue including recycling, green builders, energy efficiency, natural gas distribution, and green agriculture. MONSTER: What job skills do Veterans possess that align with green industry jobs? TOTH: Veterans have a strong work ethic, a team oriented approach, an ability to adapt to adverse conditions, and a desire to continue giving back to the community. MONSTER: Does military training and experience enable Veterans to hit the ground running in a new job? TOTH: I think it does in terms of their ability to quickly adapt to a new situation and immediately make a contribution to the organization based on the leadership skills, initiative, and motivation they bring to the workplace.Ultimately they will still have to learn new procedures and the companys way of doing things, but they are used to change and can switch roles quickly and efficiently. MONSTER: Are Veterans better able to relocate for a job more so say than the general population? TOTH:I dont think they necessarily like relocating, especially if they have kids in school and spouses with jobs but given the nature of the military, they are used to moving every 2-3 years and can handle the process better than someone who is new to the experience. MONSTER: How are employers repurposing Veteran skills to meet the demand for green industry jobs? TOTH: Solar industry employers are hiring Veterans who have experience in construction and training them to install solar panels on residential rooftops. Veterans to Farmersis training Veterans how to be successful in sustainable agriculture. MONSTER: What about the Returning Heroes Tax Credit how can such tax credits help employers? TOTH: Well, its a financial benefit to the company.A tax credit of $2,400 for a Veteran who has been unemployed at least four weeks and up to $5,600 for a Veteran who is unemployed longer than six months is a great way to offset the potential expense for providing training for that new employee. Abdominal Organs and Gastrointestinal System Abdominal Organs and Gastrointestinal System Throughout the entire gastrointestinal tract from the esophagus to the rectum, there are many ailments and congenital issues that occur to prevent people from being eligible for military service. The disqualifying medical conditions are listed below. The causes for rejection for appointment, enlistment, and induction (without an approved waiver) are an authenticated history of: Esophagus. Current or history of esophageal disease, including, but not limited to ulceration, varices, fistula, achalasia, or Gastro-Esophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), or complications from GERD including stricture, or maintenance on acid suppression medication, or other dysmotility disorders; chronic, or recurrent esophagitis, is disqualifying. GERD is a digestive disorder that affects the upper stomach and the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), the muscle that protects the stomach contents from flowing into the throat.  GERD is very common but can be relieved through diet and lifestyle changes.  Some people may require medication or surgery, which is waiverable on a case by case basis. Current or history of reactive airway disease associated with GERD is disqualifying. Current or history of dysmotility disorders (a health problem in which the muscles of the digestive system do not work as they should), chronic, or recurrent esophagitis (inflammation of the esophagus that causes pain and irritation) is disqualifying. History of surgical correction for GERD within 6 months is disqualifying. (esophageal correction, stomach correction and intestinal correction.) Stomach Ulcers and Duodenum. Current gastritis, chronic or severe, or non-ulcerative dyspepsia that requires maintenance medication is disqualifying. Dyspepsia  is a pain or an uncomfortable feeling in the upper middle part of your stomach Current ulcer of stomach or duodenum confirmed by x-ray or endoscopy is disqualifying. History of surgery for peptic ulceration or perforation is disqualifying. Small and Large Intestine. Current or history of inflammatory bowel disease, including, but not limited to unspecified, regional enteritis or Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, or ulcerative proctitis, is disqualifying. Very rarely do any of these gain waivers for admission into the military. Current or history of intestinal malabsorption syndromes, including, but not limited to post-surgical and idiopathic, is disqualifying.
