Army Awards And DecorationsArmy Awards And DecorationsThe U.S. Army uses military awards and decorations to symbolizeaccomplishments by its soldiers for heroism in combat and noncombat-related duty. The first medals and ribbons were issued to Army soldiers during the Civil War. These were unofficial awards given by individual commanders. The first official award established in the Army was the Congressional Medal of Honor, which is the highest medal of distinction.A medal will not be awarded or presented to any individual whose entire tafelgeschirr after the time of the distinguished act, achievement, or service has not been honorable. The determination of honorable is based on honest and faithful service according to the standards of conduct, courage, and duty required by law and customs of the service of a member of the grade to whom the standard is applied.Medals are earned and received, not won. For example, someone who earns a Silver Star should be described as a Silver Star reci pient.Army Units and Individual AwardsThe Army separates unit citations and awards from individual awards. Individual awards, medals, and badges are worn on the left side of the chest. Unit awards and citations are worn on the right side of the chest, above the name tag, and encased in a gold frame that wraps around the ribbon.Army awards and decorations are approved according to the guidance contained inArmy Regulation 600-8-22 Military Awards. How to Avoid Hassle During an Out-of-State Job Search
How to Avoid Hassle During an Out-of-State Job SearchHow to Avoid Hassle During an Out-of-State Job SearchThink the job market is hard now? Try searching for a job in another state. Job seekers who are looking long-distance will tell you that the search is exponentially harder when youre not a local candidate. Many employers wont even bother to talk to nonlocal job applicants. That might seem unfair, but their reasons make sense from their perspective. First and foremost, if they have plenty of well-qualified local candidates, they dont have any particular need or incentive to take on the hassles of long-distance candidates. And there are hassles unlike local candidates, long-distance job seekers cant generally come in for an interview tomorrow, often expect travel expenses to be paid by the company, typically cant start as soon as local candidates can and sometimes require relocation assistance. Whats mora, long-distance candidates sometimes change their mind about moving at the end of the hiring process (or even after theyve already accepted the job) or worse, have trouble adjusting to the new area once on the job and leave to move back home just a few months into their employment. So its not surprising that many employers simply choose not to deal with long-distance candidates. But then where does that leave you, if youre trying to find a job somewhere else?Finding a job long-distance isnt impossible, but it will usually be harder. Here are five ways to improve your chances.1. Gird yourself for a longer search. Unless you have a strongly in-demand skill set, or youre very lucky, a long-distance search is going to take longer. Prepare yourself for that in advance, so that you dont become frustrated and demoralized.2. Explain yourself upfront. Offer some context in your cover letter to explain why youre seeking a job in this particular area, so that employers have some context for your application. For instance, you might explain that youre in the process of m oving to their area to join your partner, who took a job there, or that youre from the area and excited to move back where your family is. Offering some type of explanation will help employers see you less as a long-distance candidate and more as a candidate whos in the process of becoming local. Speaking of which3. The more that you can make your move sound like a done deal, the better. Employers are skittish about out-of-town candidates for all the reasons discussed above. So the more that you can make the move sound like something that is already in the works, the more you mitigate that disadvantage. Explaining that your move is already in process or specifying a date or time frame by which you hope to be living in the area can help in that regard.4. Put the new location on yourrsum. Many employers read rsums before they even look at cover letters, so take steps on your rsumto fight the out-of-town candidate stigma there too. For instance, you can put (relocating to California) d irectly below your address, or even use a local address if you have friends or family already living in the location youre targeting. (If you do the latter, though, be sure that youre prepared for the possibility that youll be called and asked to come in for an interview as soon as tomorrow.)5. Make it as easy as possible for the employer to interview and hire you. Since one reason employers are wary of dealing with out-of-town candidates is the hassle involved, do everything you can to minimize that hassle. That can mean covering your own travel expenses, paying higher prices for last-minute tuch tickets, forgoing relocation assistance and figuring out how you can start as soon as possible if youre offered the job.

The 5 Don#8217;t#8217;s of Video Resumes
The 5 Don#8217;t#8217;s of Video Resumes The 5 Donts of Video Resumes There are now whole websites dedicated to the creation, housing and sharing of video resumes. They are simple and fun to create, but when done incorrectly, the video resume can squash any chance of getting that call back. The following are some common missteps that can will quickly get your viewer to click the stop button. Donât send a video resume to someone who doesnât want to see a video resume. Know your audience. There are certain fields and industries in which a video resume is relevant, and there are others in which a video resume makes little sense. A position that requires innovation, creativity or tech skills, would be perfect for a video resume. The higher up you are in your industry, the less likely a video resume is the way to go. That isnât to say that video resumes arenât seen as professional, but there is a time and place for such leaps outside of the box. Use common sense, and consideration for your audience when making the decision to submit a video resume. Donât turn this into the âmeâ hour. Obviously your resume is all about you, but keep it relevant, short and donât boast. The only information that should be included in a video resume is the same information that is presented in the black and white, paper version. Then whatâs the point? The point is that you can get creative with it, you can use more tools, and you more efficiently display your attitude and personality. Plus, everyone loves video. Donât get crazy. Just donât go overboard. You have all of these tools to create an eye-catching resume, but that can quickly get out of hand. At the end of the day, recruiters still want to see a well-formatted and organized presentation of your professional experience. They are only looking for a few key things. These things should be presented in a clean, efficient format. If you spend hours on a motion graphic and the recruiter still doesnât know what you do, that is a video resume fail. Donât be a poser. It is always the point of every resume to highlight your positives, thatâs a given, but the video resume should convey you as you really are. Unless youâre applying for the position of a used car salesman, donât get flashy, loud and obnoxious just because youâre in front of a camera. And reversely, donât pretend to be an ultra-professional, suit-and-tie kind of guy if thatâs not who you are. The beauty of the video resume is that recruiters get a snap shot of your personality, and thatâs a huge part of the hiring decision. Unless you want to wind up in a company culture where you donât belong, be yourself. Donât forget the basics. With all the flashy colors and transitions, donât forget to get the meaty information in there. Again, everything that is found in the paper version of your resume should be included in the video. Recruiters donât care that you can add music to a video; they need to know what you do, who you worked for, and how long you were there. They need a call-to-action and clearly stated ways of contacting you.Master the art of closing deals and making placements. Take our Recruiter Certification Program today. We're SHRM certified. Jobs in Europe - 5 Ways Recruiting is Different than in the U.S.
Jobs in Europe - 5 Ways Recruiting is Different than in the U.S. Jobs in Europe - 5 Ways Recruiting is Different than in the U.S. 5 Ways Recruiting Is Different in EuropeWhether youâre a candidate looking for work or a recruiter looking for talent, you should know before you go that European recruiting and American recruiting are different beasts. The same tactics that work in the U.S. wonât work in Europe - and vice versa. If you intend to do some cross-cultural recruiting or job hunting soon, keep these tips in mind:1) Europe Is No MonolithNot that every U.S. state is culturally the same, but in terms of recruiting and hiring, recruiters and candidates share similar expectations, processes, and strategies from coast to coast. What works in New Jersey is likely to work in Ohio, or Texas, or California. The same canât be said for Europe. While many Americans may think of Europe as one undifferentiated landmass, the continent actually consists of 44 different countries. Source: freepik.comThese countries can be very culturally different from one another, and many donât even share the same languages. In ad dition, each country has its own labor laws, expectations for recruiting and hiring, standard hiring procedures, and so on.As ERE contributor Véronique Oonk puts it, âData on the most effective recruitment approach on the local labor markets in Europe is non-existent. There is not a European recruitment standard.âIn other words: What works in France wonât work in Italy. When recruiting or job seeking in Europe, you have to be hyperlocal with your strategy.2. Recruiting Lives Online in America - Less So in EuropeOne thing Europe and America have in common: networking and referrals are the top sources of hires in both areas. According to Link Humans, almost a quarter of jobs are filled by networking or referrals in Europe. In the U.S., referrals account for around 30 percent of hires. For Americans, much of their networking is social networking, especially among younger job seekers. One study found that 73 percent of American millennials found their latest job through social me dia.In Europe, however, social media plays a much smaller role in filling jobs. According to Link Humans, only 2 percent of job openings in Europe are filled through social media! If youâre searching for a job or candidate in Europe, youâll want to rely more on old-fashioned, person-to-person networking than on social media sites.3. LinkedIn Holds Less Power in EuropeSpeaking of social networks: LinkedIn is the king of professional social media in America. In one survey, 90 percent of companies said they had made a hire through LinkedIn in the states. In Europe, LinkedInâs status is more contested. While 64 percent of companies in Europe use LinkedIn, other social media networks enjoy more popularity in certain countries. For example, Xing is more popular in Germany, and Viadeo gives LinkedIn a run for its money in France. The lesson here: When hunting for jobs or candidates in Europe, donât assume LinkedIn is your best bet. Find out what the go-to professional social networki ng site is in the target country.4. Differing Expectations Around Benefits PackagesA âstandardâ benefits package can hardly be said to exist in the U.S., mainly because there is very little in the way of legislation requiring employers to give employees much of anything.By contrast, many European countries have enshrined in law what Americans consider job perks. As a result, most European countries outpace the U.S. in terms of paid maternity/paternity leave, paid time off, and unemployment benefits.European candidates may, as a result, expect much more from companies in terms of perks and benefits. As Oonk notes, âFrance has what is called âavantages en nature,â which loosely translates to âsocial packages.â This includes things like commuting expenses, childrenâs tuition expenses, bonus money for vacations, etc. These are extremely important to job seekers and should be highlighted when possible.âFor European talent, the lack of robust benefits can be a dealbreake r. For American talent, the existence of robust benefits can be a dealmaker.5. CVs and ResumesIn America, companies will ask candidates to send in their resumes to apply for roles. In Europe, however, candidates are asked for CVs, or âcurriculum vitae.âWhatâs the difference between CVs and resumes? Not much, honestly. The American resume and the European CV are very similar documents. One major exception: In some European countries, it is customary to include a photo with your CV. In America, this is a major no-go.Also of note: âCVâ means something very different in America. The American CV is a much longer, more in-depth document typically used only in the academic professions. It can be kind of confusing for international job seekers and recruiters to keep this all straight, but just remember: American resume = European CV.

5 details to consider when moving youre career out of state
5 details to consider when moving you're career out of state 5 details to consider when moving you're career out of state If you landed your dream job in another state or simply want to start a new career in a different city, get excited! Youâre about to make a big move that could change the entire course of your life. While this is an exciting adventure filled with new people, new experiences and more, moving can be difficult. Especially if youâre moving far away, or even across the country. From finding an apartment to moving all of your belongings, itâs a costly task that few of us- if any- actually enjoy. Before you pack your bags, consider the following details to make the move a little easier.1. Speak to Your EmployerSee if your current- if youâre transferring- or new employer will help with your move financially. Some companies offer relocation assistance, and even if the first answer is a no, you may be able to negotiate your way there. If you have to negotiate, Michael Chaffers, a Monster contributor, suggests keeping the following in mind: Make a list of where you need financial assistance. âBefore you limit what you ask for, make sure you know what you want. Think broadly and do not limit yourself to financial expenses,â explains Monster. Find out what assistance is standard: This would be in the relocation policy. If there isnât one, ask friends about what their company offers. Note that some commonly covered costs include: moving costs, temporary living, and travel back home (for those with a family). Come up with ideas that benefit the company: If paying extra to get you into your new apartment faster allows you to get back to work faster, they have more incentive to say yes. Find ways to make this type of case with what you need. Get it in writing: Once they say yes, have it written and signed with specific details on what theyâre paying for and how much. 2. Research the Cost of RentFinancially, youâll need to research the cost of rent in your new city. If you donât have a new job yet, you can use this to negotiate your new salary. If cost of living is higher, it makes sense that youâll make a larger jump between your old job and new job.If you know where youâre going already, check out rent reports like this one for Champaign, Illinois from Abodo. Youâll get a full assessment of the local rental market in the city where you plan to live, allowing you to choose the best neighborhood for your preferences and budget. When you know how much rent is, you can start saving appropriately, in addition to using that data for salary negotiations. Plus, living in a new city means youâll be spending a lot more to try new restaurants and meet new people. Donât blow your budget on rent if you can avoid it.3. Prep Your ResumeIf you donât have a new job yet, but hope to land one when you arrive, the time to start preparing is now. As y ou start your job search- which you should do before you leave, unless you have enough money saved to wait- consider the challenges of interviewing from out of town. Here are a few ways to overcome these common issues: Location on your resume: Donât lie; put âRelocating to [location] in Month/Yearâ where youâd normally put your home base. You can explain in interviews. Network: Tap into your network in the new location, if you have one, to secure interviews and referrals. This will make it easier to get in with a company when youâre not currently in the area. Interviews: Dress like you normally would, and face the camera toward an empty wall. Donât show any boxes or your midst-of-a-move apartment chaos. Be flexible: If you can, offer flexibility. If they need someone in two weeks, offer to be there, in-house, in two weeks. This can increase your chances of getting the job since many companies are on a hiring timeline. 4. Get Clear on Your DecisionWith any new job, thereâs an element of risk and uncertainty. When transitioning from one job to another in a different state, that risk is even higher. Before jumping in head first, ask yourself the questions below to make sure itâs the best move for your career right now: Does this job get you closer to your ultimate goal? Is the company in good financial standing? Is there room for upward growth within the company? If you can answer yes to most or all of these, thereâs a good chance this is a great move for your career.5. Address the Cost of LivingIn addition to rent, itâs important to consider the overall cost of living in your new city or state. This can also play into your salary negotiations, and the price of food and services greatly vary throughout the United States, so the time to prepare is now.Luckily, this is an easy one to research. Start with CNBCâs 2017 Most Expensive States to Live In report, which found that Washingtonâs transportation is 16.9 percent more expensive than the national average and groceries in this state are 7.4 percent more expensive. If you canât get the salary you feel you need, you may need to consider starting a side hustle or saving extra money now to help you better adjust later.Get Ready for a New LifeThe time has come to prepare for your big move. Consider how this change will affect your career and how you can make the most of your time to prepar e now. Use these ideas to get your life in order before taking the plunge. Before you know it, youâll be driving off into the sunset, with a new career so close you can taste it.This article was originally published on Create + Cultivate.

5 of the Best Millennial Resume Tips
5 of the Best Millennial Resume Tips 5 of the Best Millennial Resume Tips Writing a resume has changed quite a bit since that of the previous generation. Where soft skills and extended experience was once encouraged, todays resumes should be more value focused and trimmed to about one page. For millennial professionals, this means focusing on what you can provide to the employer, rather than focusing on how long your resume is. For more millennial resume tips, check out the list below! Here are five millennial resume tips. 1. Create a value statement. While an objective statement has long been a part of resumes, itâs more important to show value when creating a resume. Spend time creating a value statement that not only showcases your skills and experience, but relates them to real-world business issues. By creating a value statement, you can show your strengths and value to the hiring company. Similar to a Summary of Qualifications, your value statement is a combination of your skills, experience, and personality traits that qualify you for a particular role: More than 5 years experience in training development and delivery, motivation and team building/leadership, general and technical project management, product marketing and management, negotiation, and mediation. 2. Lose the fluff. Employers are looking for candidates that will contribute to the organization in a specific manner. They are not focusing on skills or qualifications that are more universal. As a millennial, it is important to focus on the value you can provide to a given company, rather than all the fluff (also known as soft skills) you often see in older resumes. Donât focus a lot of time on the soft skills you possess; rather, focus on the achievement-based experience and skills you have. This is what will set you apart from the competition and make an impression. 3. Add project work and achievements. A lot of millennials have project-based experience or non-job-related achievements that can be applied to job applications. Highlight experiences such as internships, freelance work, or even volunteer projects that have given you experience and skills needed for a given position, or that might attract a certain employer. 4. Check for relevance. In the past, a resume would have included all experience that a person had acquired. With newer formats and with trying to keep a resume to about one page, millennials should focus on relevance and quality over quantity. This applies to work experience, as well as project work and achievements. Rather than list everything you have ever done, include experiences and skills that are relevant to the position and will make you stand out. 5. Keep it simple. As a generation, millennials are quite innovative and creative. Although it might sound like a good idea to jazz up your resume, itâs probably something you should hold off on doing. One of the biggest reasons is that most resumes are being delivered through online systems. Sending in a creative resume could hurt your chances of your resume ever being seen outside the computer system. Now, this doesnât mean you canât put a little personality into your cover letter and resume. And for those in the design field where creativity is a plus, consider having two resumes, or hand-deliver it if you have the ability to do so. Another option would be to create an online portfolio so you can submit both a standard resume and pieces of your work. Remember as you send out your resume to make sure it is focused on the value you can provide to the company, while also making you stand out from the competition. Lose the fluff and provide employers with hard facts that will prove to them that you will be an asset to the company. And, while it might be fun to add personality to your resume, consider sticking to a more traditional format and setting up an easily shareable portfolio. Vets at the Ready to Fill Green Industry Jobs
Vets at the Ready to Fill Green Industry Jobs Vets at the Ready to Fill Green Industry Jobs Vets at the Ready to Fill Green Industry Jobs April 24, 2012 Blaszczyk, Managing Editor, Resource Center From wind turbine technicians to solar panel installers, the demand for green industry jobs is growing. Who is best positioned to fill the demand for these green jobs? Our nations Veterans, says John Toth, Senior Director of Veterans Programs at Veterans Green Jobs. The non-profit organization is calling on all green employers to look at the many benefits that Veterans provide in helping fill green industry jobs. The organizations Veterans Green Force program matches Veterans military experience and career interests to the skills needed by green sector employers, linking them to training and educational programs and ultimately available green jobs. The program has already trained and placed hundreds of Veterans in outdoor conservation and home energy efficiency jobs. We spoke with Lieutenant Colonel (Retired, U.S. Army) John Tothfrom the Veterans Green Jobs Denver headquarters. MONSTER: How can Veterans Green Jobs help employers find the talent they need particularly growing companies that have larger hiring needs? TOTH: We go out and connect with Veterans, sit down with them one-on-one, learn their job skills and career goals, and then match them with employers. We want to build relationships with both the Veteran and the employers to meet both their needs MONSTER: What are some of the success stories youve facilitated in matching Veterans skills with the green job industry? TOTH: Dan Conerdis one of our success stories. He came to us two years ago and we recommended he look into the solar degree program at Red Rocks Community College.Recently, after earning his diploma, he returned to us and we were able to find him a job with one of our industry partners Namaste Solar. MONSTER: What are some of the new job opportunities youre seeing for hiring Veteransin green technology jobs? TOTH: There really are multiple opportunities out there, depending on your skill set and you career goals. When people think of green industry, they think in terms of solar and wind power. The reality is that there are many different avenues Veterans can pursue including recycling, green builders, energy efficiency, natural gas distribution, and green agriculture. MONSTER: What job skills do Veterans possess that align with green industry jobs? TOTH: Veterans have a strong work ethic, a team oriented approach, an ability to adapt to adverse conditions, and a desire to continue giving back to the community. MONSTER: Does military training and experience enable Veterans to hit the ground running in a new job? TOTH: I think it does in terms of their ability to quickly adapt to a new situation and immediately make a contribution to the organization based on the leadership skills, initiative, and motivation they bring to the workplace.Ultimately they will still have to learn new procedures and the companys way of doing things, but they are used to change and can switch roles quickly and efficiently. MONSTER: Are Veterans better able to relocate for a job more so say than the general population? TOTH:I dont think they necessarily like relocating, especially if they have kids in school and spouses with jobs but given the nature of the military, they are used to moving every 2-3 years and can handle the process better than someone who is new to the experience. MONSTER: How are employers repurposing Veteran skills to meet the demand for green industry jobs? TOTH: Solar industry employers are hiring Veterans who have experience in construction and training them to install solar panels on residential rooftops. Veterans to Farmersis training Veterans how to be successful in sustainable agriculture. MONSTER: What about the Returning Heroes Tax Credit how can such tax credits help employers? TOTH: Well, its a financial benefit to the company.A tax credit of $2,400 for a Veteran who has been unemployed at least four weeks and up to $5,600 for a Veteran who is unemployed longer than six months is a great way to offset the potential expense for providing training for that new employee. Ten bad habits you must eliminate from your daily routine
Ten bad habits you must eliminate from your daily routine Ten bad habits you must eliminate from your daily routine You are the sum of your habits. When you allow bad habits to take over, they dramatically impede your path to success. The challenge is bad habits are insidious, creeping up on you slowly until you donât even notice the damage theyâre causing.âChains of habit are too light to be felt until they are too heavy to be broken.â â" Warren BuffettBreaking bad habits requires self-control- and lots of it. Research indicates that itâs worth the effort, as self-control has huge implications for success.University of Pennsylvania psychologists Angela Duckworth and Martin Seligman conducted a study where they measured college studentsâ IQ scores and levels of self-control upon entering university. Four years later, they looked at the studentsâ grade point averages (GPA) and found that self-control was twice as important as IQ in earning a high GPA.The self-control required to develop good habits (and stop bad ones) also serves as the foundation for a strong work ethic and high pro ductivity. Self-control is like a muscle- to build it up you need to exercise it. Practice flexing your self-control muscle by breaking the following bad habits:Using your phone, tablet, or computer in bed. This is a big one that most people donât even realize harms their sleep and productivity. Short-wavelength blue light plays an important role in your mood, energy level, and sleep quality. In the morning, sunlight contains high concentrations of this blue light. When your eyes are exposed to it directly, the blue light halts production of the sleep-inducing hormone melatonin and makes you feel more alert. In the afternoon, the sunâs rays lose their blue light, which allows your body to produce melatonin and start making you sleepy. By the evening, your brain doesnât expect any blue light exposure and is very sensitive to it.Most of our favorite evening devices- laptops, tablets, and mobile phones- emit short-wavelength blue light brightly and right in your face. This expos ure impairs melatonin production and interferes with your ability to fall asleep as well as with the quality of your sleep once you do nod off. As weâve all experienced, a poor nightâs sleep has disastrous effects. The best thing you can do is to avoid these devices after dinner (television is OK for most people as long as they sit far enough away from the set).Impulsively surfing the Internet. It takes you 15 consecutive minutes of focus before you can fully engage in a task. Once you do, you fall into a euphoric state of increased productivity called flow. Research shows that people in a flow state are five times more productive than they otherwise would be. When you click out of your work because you get an itch to check the news, Facebook, a sportâs score, or what have you, this pulls you out of flow. This means you have to go through another 15 minutes of continuous focus to reenter the flow state. Click in and out of your work enough times, and you can go through an ent ire day without experiencing flow.Checking your phone during a conversation. Nothing turns people off like a mid-conversation text message or even a quick glance at your phone. When you commit to a conversation, focus all your energy on the conversation. You will find that conversations are more enjoyable and effective when you immerse yourself in them.Using multiple notifications. Multiple notifications are a productivity nightmare. Studies have shown that hopping on your phone and e-mail every time they ping for your attention causes your productivity to plummet. Getting notified every time a message drops onto your phone or an e-mail arrives in your inbox might feel productive, but it isnât. Instead of working at the whim of your notifications, pool all your e-mails/texts and check them at designated times (e.g., respond to your e-mails every hour). This is a proven, productive way to work.Saying âyesâ when you should say âno.â Research conducted at the University of California in Berkeley shows that the more difficulty that you have saying no, the more likely you are to experience stress, burnout, and even depression, all of which erode self-control. Saying no is indeed a major self-control challenge for many people. âNoâ is a powerful word that you should not be afraid to wield. When itâs time to say no, emotionally intelligent people avoid phrases like âI donât think I canâ or âIâm not certain.â Saying no to a new commitment honors your existing commitments and gives you the opportunity to successfully fulfill them. Just remind yourself that saying no is an act of self-control now that will increase your future self-control by preventing the negative effects of over commitment.Thinking about toxic people. There are always going to be toxic people who have a way of getting under your skin and staying there. Each time you find yourself thinking about a coworker or person who makes your blood boil, practice being grateful for someone else in your life instead. There are plenty of people out there who deserve your attention, and the last thing you want to do is think about the people who donât matter when there are people who do.Multitasking during meetings. You should never give anything half of your attention, especially meetings. If a meeting isnât worth your full attention, then you shouldnât be attending it in the first place; and if the meeting is worth your full attention, then you need to get everything you can out of it. Multitasking during meetings hurts you by creating the impression that you believe you are more important than everyone else.Gossiping. Gossipers derive pleasure from other peopleâs misfortunes. It might be fun to peer into somebody elseâs personal or professional faux pas at first, but over time, it gets tiring, makes you feel gross, and hurts other people. There are too many positives out there and too much to learn from interesting people to waste your time talkin g about the misfortune of others.âGreat minds discuss ideas, average ones discuss events, and small minds discuss people.â â" Eleanor RooseveltWaiting to act until you know youâll succeed. Most writers spend countless hours brainstorming their characters and plots, and they even write page after page that they know theyâll never include in the books. They do this because they know that ideas need time to develop. We tend to freeze up when itâs time to get started because we know that our ideas arenât perfect and that what we produce might not be any good. But how can you ever produce something great if you donât get started and give your ideas time to evolve? Author Jodi Picoult summarized the importance of avoiding perfectionism perfectly: âYou can edit a bad page, but you canât edit a blank page.âComparing yourself to other people. When your sense of pleasure and satisfaction are derived from comparing yourself to others, you are no longer the master of your own happiness. When you feel good about something that youâve done, donât allow anyoneâs opinions or accomplishments take that away from you. While itâs impossible to turn off your reactions to what others think of you, you donât have to compare yourself to others, and you can always take peopleâs opinions with a grain of salt. That way, no matter what other people are thinking or doing, your self-worth comes from within. Regardless of what people think of you at any particular moment, one thing is certain- youâre never as good or bad as they say you are.Bringing it all togetherBy practicing self-control to break these bad habits, you can simultaneously strengthen your self-control muscle and abolish nasty habits that have the power to bring your career to a grinding halt.Travis Bradberry is the co-author of Emotional Intelligence 2.0 and the cofounder of TalentSmart. This column first appeared at LinkedIn.
